Three of the Scunthorpe Alphas’ up-and-coming stars have returned home victorious after playing a role in Great Britain U17s’ victory in Spain last weekend.
Wide receiver Jay Robinson, linebacker Jake Marriott and defensive lineman Riley Read were part of the Under 17s group that travelled to Zaragoza for this European international fixture.
They helped lead Team GB to a 32-23 over their hosts, with Marriott providing a memorable moment when he recovered a Spanish fumble to give Britain possession of the football.
Jay, Jake and Riley’s presence in Spain was helped largely by club sponsors STAIT, who covered the expense involved so that the three young Alphas could represent their country overseas.
We would once again like to take this opportunity to thank STAIT and its founder, former Scunthorpe Steelers player Shaun Sargent, for their continued and generous support of our club.
Shaun had this to say about seeing three of Scunthorpe’s future stars making an impact on the international stage:
“Congratulations to Jay, Jake and Riley for representing the club so very well in their positions in Team GB. It’s a real pleasure to see the guys doing what they do and it’s amazing for them, the team, their families, the coaches and for Scunthorpe to be represented at such a high level.
“It’s proof that the Alphas program works; bringing talent to the fore. To see these guys not just being part of the team but excelling in the team is a testimony to the work everyone at the Alphas puts in. Everybody is pulling together as a family.
“The experience that these three young men will have had will be memorable for the rest of their lives, but they are all definitely going to go much, much further. So to see three young Alphas growing and going up the ladder is mind-blowing. We’re all very proud of you all.”
